New London has made Realtor.com’s list of the most affordable beach towns in the country.
The real estate listing website chose locations based on the median price of houses within one mile of the beach, as well as the median price-per-square-foot of those houses.
The coastal town of New London was the third-most affordable beach town on the list with a median home price of $257,000 and a median price per square foot of $175.
“New London is like a little gem of affordability,” said Keith Turner, a mortgage lender with Homestead Funding, to Realtor.com. “Just look at the prices in some of the cities near here.”
Notable aspects of New London named in Realtor.com’sort include its boardwalk, beachside entertainment and events during the summer.
“People tend to overlook the area,” Turner told Realtor. “It’s a true seaport town. It’s got community. You know your neighbors here. It’s not like those other touristy New England towns. New London still has the same feel it’s had for a long time.”
According to Realtor.com, homes in nearby Mystic cost on average three-times the amount per square foot in comparison to homes in New London.
Other northeast towns to make the list include Atlantic City (no. 6) and Shirley, New York (no. 10).
